RET Construction Improves Aircraft Movement and Succeeding Indonesia & Presidency at the 2022 G20 Summit

BANDUNG - Bali province is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Indonesia. Aircraft traffic at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport is mainly for tourists coming to the island of Bali. 

In 2017, aircraft movements at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport reached 30 movements/hour. The runway system needs to be added with a Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET) to increase the runway capacity. RET design requires careful technical calculations because it involves aspects of flight safety. In RET, the speed of the aircraft is still relatively high. NSE won the trust of PT. Angkasa Pura I (Persero) to carry out the RET design. 

As the design consultant, NSE played a role in designing the Westside RET facility. This RET planning includes drainage, AFL & Electrical planning, and other supporting facilities. 

RET location is calculated using the three-segment method. In this method, the variables considered include aircraft landing speed, runway slope, and tailwind. Based on the aircraft population statistics at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport at the time of the design and assessing the probability of using aircraft in the future, the most representative position for RET is at 2,366 m from Threshold 27. RET is planned to accommodate Category 4 aircraft. RET is designed with a turning radius of 550 m to allow the aircraft to exit at a speed of 93 km/h during wet runway conditions. In addition, RET is planned to accommodate the designed aircraft, namely the Boeing 777-300ER, with an MTOW of 351 tons. 

Reporting from ekon.go.id, in 2022 Indonesia will officially hold the Presidency Group of Twenty (G20) for a whole year, starting from December 1, 2021, until the G20 Summit in November 2022 in Bali, which is Indonesia's momentum for branding. This branding in the long term will increase other countries' confidence in Indonesia, and Indonesia can become the center stage in the international arena. 

The improvement of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport facilities, such as the construction of RET, can undoubtedly increase aircraft movements, especially during the G20 Summit. With thorough preparations and improvements to I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport facilities, Indonesia can increase confidence and show that Indonesia is ready to lead the G20 countries as the presidency of the G20 Summit in 2022.
